What is shellac? It is probably not what you think. Of course, it's a finish that is applied to wood to give it beauty and security has been. You probably know that. However, what is it made? Answer may surprise you; bug secretion is shellac. In India, a small insect that sucks sap from several species of trees as it secretes a resin to protect themselves and their eggs. Resin million is said and what is done to make shellac. Now you ask, "What is shellac" no longer will.

Shellac is available, more than any hardware store or home center and comes in many different varieties: orange, lemon, white and white to name but a few. There are so many colors you can usually leave stains on the side of shellac. Shellac can be purchased two ways: in flakes or with alcohol premixed. Many woodworkers prefer an indefinite shelf life because of the flakes, premixed shellac is good for only about 6 months.

If you choose to use shellac flakes with, you will mix it with denatured alcohol. For a topcoat, the flakes to a gallon of wine, about 2 pounds figure. If you are printing, flakes 1 / 2 £ 1 should be fine.

Before you apply shellac, wood must be prepared properly. It involves sanding the surface with 320 grit paper. When using shellac, sanding a finished product is important to be happy with. for sanding later, make sure you remove all the dust with a cotton ball soaked with paint thinner. Then wipe with a rag dampened with alcohol.

When applying shellac, you have several options from which to choose. It can be sprayed or applied with a brush or cloth. Take into account the fact that shellac dries very quickly. If you find that your shellac is drying too fast, you buy yourself a little more time to add to the mix shellac retardant. To get you where you should be able to buy shellac flakes.

If you have a brush, which is the most woodworkers do, there is a procedure to follow to get the best results with your decision to apply shellac. Let's take a look:

Dip only half of shellac brush * and can wipe the excess on the side.
Wood edge 1 1 / 2 inches * about to begin, drag the brush lightly to the edge, then going back to the other end.
Stroke you just created, and to make a 1 / 4 inch overlap beyond *.
* Repeat the process until the entire surface is covered.
* Repeat the first 3 steps at the edges.
* This at least an hour, with 320 grit sandpaper, then allow to dry sand.
* 0000 # to use steel wool, rub over.
Sure it is free of lint - * Clean the surface with a rag.
Put on another coat of shellac on it and * allow to dry for 12 hours.
* 320 grit paper again, using the sand the second coat and follow it with steel wool # 0000.
* Wipe clean.
* Repeat all steps until you have 4 or 5 coats applied.
* The final step rub down with steel wool # 0000 until the end looks the way you want.

Shellac is nontoxic, very easy to apply and repair, and clean like a dream. The hot liquid, or to scratch does not hold well, but it is a flaw. One way around this, use dewaxed shellac and varnish with a cover. Apply shellac time but seems well worth the time and effort. Try it on your next project.
